Class I

My name is Nakatake, and I am in charge of Class I for this school year. The long summer break is over and the new school year has started. It is getting cold in the mornings and evenings, so please take good care of yourself, so as not to catch cold. During the last term, we studied from the A, I, U, E, O to Sa, Shi, Su, Se, So. The class size is larger this term, so we will start with the Ta, Chi, Tsu, Te, To, and the A through So will be treated as a review.

To master stroke order, the students say the following out loud by raising their hands: One red, two blue, three green and four yellow. By playing in various ways using their hands, I hope the students will enjoy learning Hiragana. I am looking forward to working with the new children. (Ms. Nakatake)

Class II

My name is Oozeki and I'm in charge of Class 2. It is nice to get to know you. In this class the students will learn to write and read simple sentences as well as grammar. Also, Hiragana and voiceless consonants will be reviewed. This month's lesson theme is family. Please help your child(ren) because they might find it difficult to handle by themselves.
(Ms. Ozeki)

Class III

Our long awaited classes have finally started. In this class, there are 21 kids full of energy. The students will be transitioning to the next steps: writing and reading short sentences and learning Katakana, going over what they learned in Classes I and II. I hope the students find the lessons interesting by learning through real life experiences. Everyone has a different level of understanding. Your assistance at home will be appreciated.
(Ms. Umehata)

JFL

My name is Yamada and I am in charge of JFL starting this school year. My motto for this class is to learn through fun. Thank you in advance for your support. Our lessons for October will evolve around annual Candy House and Daikon-seed planting. This is the first JFL class that will cover those subjects. The students will make a poster for the Okashiyashiki lessons. With Daikon-planting, the students will learn about vegetable gardens, how to plant seeds and watering. There will be more collaborative lessons with other classes, which will provide them with additional opportunities to be exposed to Japanese.
(Ms. Yamada)

Lower Grade

I believe "the beginning is most important to achieve meaningful learning in both Japanese and English for children in Los Angeles". I certainly understand parents' wishes about "learning Katakana and Kanji early", as I once believed; however, I have come to realize that it is most important for children to focus on listening, dictation, and good command of pencils for them to achieve a high enough level of Japanese that they can progress on their own. I discuss my concern about command of pencils at the open house.
I am looking forward to working with your children.
Please contribute to the fertilizer project in Kodomo no Ie vegetable field.
(Ms. Sakamoto)

Middle Grade

How do you do. I am Shrecker Michiko, the teacher for the elementary middle grade class. I am pleased to meet you.
We will be studying a photo book, "Hungry Planet". The theme for this term is food culture worldwide, and I will concentrate on small themes of interest to children as much as possible.
We will also have the Candy House project on October 25.
We will make an invitation card for the preschoolers as a part of its preparation.
(Ms. Shrecker)

Upper Grade

I, Miyajima, will teach the Upper grade class. Please be a part of my class for the coming year.
We have a class full of 10 energetic children.
This month's learning is focused on the annual Candy House. We have responsibility as upper grade students, such as writing letters to ask for donation to sell in the Candy House, and leading the younger children.
This school year's theme is "Hungry Planet", a photo book. The first term will be about "food culture around the world". During the class, I will have children ask "why" about the information they are given.
(Ms. Miyajima)

Middle School

The new term has begun. We will have a new class with new addition to our class. I, Ms. Douglas, will be the teacher for this class. This year, the elementary middle grade, upper grade, and middle school classes will study the shared theme of "Hungry Planet", and will develop age-appropriate learning activities.
Just learning something once is usually not enough to stabilize a memory, so I plan classes to include some repetition in Kanji, vocabulary, expression, content, way of thinking and so on. We will think about what is happening not only here, but around the world, and why that is happening.
The only Earth! Parents, please think together with your children.
(Ms. Douglas)

Thank you: Ms. Hayashi, Ms. Kono, Mr. Roberts
