Open house & Talk for Saturday Classes

After the presentation of each class, Mrs. Douglas, our middle-school-class teacher, will give a talk on the Japanese language teaching method used at our Saturday classes. Please join us and take this opportunity to learn more about the unique Japanese language teaching method we use at Kodomo no Ie.

Date: Saturday June 6, 2009
Place: Church Hall
Time: 9:30 – 11:00 Open House
11:00 – 12:00 Talk

The talk is open to general public. You do not have to be a parent of a Saturday class student. Please invite friends & family who may be interested in this wonderful event.

Class I

There are many events, such as Kodomo no hi (or Children's Day), Mother's Day, and Sports Day in May. While discussing each event, we will work on several projects that children enjoy. We will study Ka Ki Ku Ke Ko of Hirakana. We will also review Hiragana characters "A" and "O", since A and O are very similar. We will continue to learn by reading out loud. We will play games that everybody has an opportunity to participate. Parents, please ask them what they did in the class. The open house on June 6 is approaching. We are planning to present hand-play we've been practicing in the class.
(Ms. Nakatake)

Class II

The new trimester has started and we have a lot of new students. We will refresh our mind and study Japanese language. There are many events, such as Kodomo no hi (or Japanese Children's Day), Mother's Day, and Sports Day in this month. We will study words that are associated with these events while we look forward to and enjoy these events. We will also study phrases. We will continue on our mini-story book production that we started last month. I would like each of my students to make as many books as they can and would like to them to present their stories at our presentation.
(Ms. Ozeki)

JFL

Our Spring Break is now over. The weather has been warmer these days. There are many events, such as Kodomo no hi (or Japanese Children's Day), Mother's Day, and Sports Day in May. We will learn various things that are associated with these events. We will also learn about spring while walking outside & around the school and looking for words about spring. We will draw a map of the area we walked, discuss what we saw and where we saw things, and share with everybody. I am looking forward to finding many spring related words in our exploration.
(Ms. Yamada)

Lower Grade

In this class, we have put our effort in looking at the number 10 mathematically to supplement the lessons of postpositions (Te, Ni Wo and Ha-- pronounced Wa). For example, I had students say out loud, “7 To 3 De 10 Ni narimasu,” (Add 3 to 7 makes 10) and “10 Wa 8 To 2 Ni wakeraremasu,” (10 can be made up of 8 and 2), and work on sentence dictations. In May, I will be explaining the multiplication tables and have the students memorize them. Your assistance at home would be appreciated.
(Ms. Sakamoto)

Middle Grade

How was your spring break? During the break, thank you for your assistance in the assignment titled “Do your chores and write about them.” This month, we will wrap up April's theme, Family and start preparing for a presentation in June as well as the year's lessons review. I'll try my best to include students' feedback on the topic and construction of the presentation. The school year is almost ending; we only have 6 weeks left. I would like to inform you that I am planning on a one-on-one parent-teacher conference. Please take a look at class correspondence for details.
(Ms. Shrecker)

Higher Grade

The third term has started! Children's Day, Mother's Day, Sports Day… after the series of those events in May, we only have two more classes left. Let's have fun toward the finishing line. I was very impressed with each of the student's mini presentations in the Higher Grade that took place at the end of the second term. Let me share with you some of the topics covered: introduction of Hungry Planet, interesting menus found at McDonald's in the world, history of McDonald, the Big Mac recipe, the difference between McDonald and In-N-Out Burger, and the nutritional value of Chicken Select. Generally speaking, eating fast food is considered not good for you. This month, we will further look into the belief and think about the way to deal with the negative aspects.
(Ms. Miyajima)

Middle School

I hope you had a relaxing two-week spring break. We have only 6 weeks left for this school year. Before the break, we learned about the refugee issue resulting from a civil war in the Darfu, Sudan. After the break, we will study about the refugee issue in Myanmar where Angelina Jolie as UNICEF ambassador visited. Then we will review what we learned through Hungry Planet in this school year. Throughout this year, the children have been able to look beyond their immediate world – here, me and my family vs. other people in far away places. One of the main goals across the board for middle/higher grades and middle school was to nurture the ability to think by questioning and probing for an answer on their own. At our presentation, I would like to share with you the lessons from Hungry Planet that made the strongest impression in the students' mind.
(Ms. Douglas)

Thank you: Ms. Roth, Ms. Hayashi
