January Theme: Oshogatsu - New Year

Class I & II

Study Objectives:

- Share the joy of New Years with friends
- Enjoy the experience of New Years games
- Write with correct penmanship and correct posture

Learning Activities:

- Experience New Year's card game (Karuta-tori) as a part of japanese traditional new year's game
- Make simple kite and enjoy flying it outdoors
- Learn how to make new year's card, and make new year's card to friends and family

Vocabulary and Grammar:

Words with "Ma, Mi, Mu, Me & Mo", their stroke order and correct shape of the characters etc
Days of week (Sunday through Saturday), and days of month (1st, 2nd, 3rd days of the month etc)

Class III

Study Objectives:

- Understand the rules, and enjoy new year's games with friends
- Be interested in zodiac
- Learn vocabulary related to Mochi-tsuki, and New Year

Learning Activities:

- Card Game (Karuta), Board game (Sugoroku), more games like Fukuwarai
- Listen to stories about Zodiac
- Telling about your own winter vacation

Vocabulary and Grammar:

- Ganjitsu, Oju, Ozoni, Otoshidama, Kadomatsu, Nengajo, Okagami, Omedetogozaimasu, Omochi, Kine, Usu, Tsuku, Marumeru
- Memorize Zodiac animals

Lower Grade

Study Objectives:

- Expand vocabulary by playing new year's games
- Learn antonyms
- Learn directions and express the directions in Japanese

Learning Activities:

- Card game (Karuta), cup and ball (Kendama), make-a-face-game (Fukuwarai), knock-a-block (Daruma Otoshi), battledore (Hanetsuki), spinning top (Koma Mawashi), Kite (Tako Age) etc
- Making your own Kite

Vocabulary and Grammar:

Vocabulary: Ue, Shita, Migi, Hidari, Me, Kuchi, Hana, Mayuge, Mimi, Kao, Takai, Hikui etc
Grammar: Hajimeni ... shimasu. Tsugini ... shimasu. Saigoni ... shimasu.


Middle Grade

Study Objectives:

- Expand vocabulary of order words through playing New Year’s games and enjoy the traditional Japanese games.
- Be able to look up the kanji dictionary using the number of strokes in the kanji
- Find kanji characters from “Mittsu no Onegai (Three Wishes)” in the kanji dictionary

Learning Activities:

- Play New Year’s games such as “Karuta tori,” “Kendama,” “Fukuwarai,” and “Daruma Otoshi” in groups crossing over grade levels
- Play kanji search games which will enhance kanji dictionary skills
- Continue Daikon radish observation journal

Vocabulary and Grammar:

- Vocabulary -
toru (take), hiku (pull), nuku (pull out), tsuku (poke or pound), etc
- Grammar -
hajimeni..(first), tsugini…(next), saigoni….(finally)
~to yuu…ga arimasu (There is a …..called……..), etc

Upper Grade

Study Objectives:

- To be able to retell a story in his/her own words by writing
- Learn various origins of Osechi (New Year’s dishes)
- To be able to retell an episode in his/her own words by speaking
- To be able to decipher visual data & documents
- To be able to fully utilize his/her knowledge and draw rational hypotheses
- Learn the names and location of various islands in Japan

Learning Activities:

- Read and listen to tales of the zodiac animals and retell the stories using his/her words by writing
- Read and listen to the origins of Osechi (New Year’s dishes) and retell in his/her words by speaking
- Study the regional map for the various Ozoni types (New Year’s mochi dish) and come up with a hypothesis on the regional variations
We will continue this theme until mid-February

- Words of hearsay ~といわれています(it is said….) ~そうです(it is supposedly…)
- Words of possibility きっと(surely)、~でしょう(I assume..) ~だと思います(I think..) ~かもしれません(It may be..)

Middle School

Study Objectives:

- Develop analytical skills by comparing and analyzing why there are different New Year’s dishes by regions and by periods in history
- Search and collect data using the internet in Japanese
- To be able to identify different regions in Japan
- Prepare and present a research report to the class

Learning Activities:

- Study the regional Ozoni (New Year’s mochi dish) and create a national ozoni map
- Learn regional features (geography and products) through the research on Ozoni
