April Theme : Spring

* During the class, we will have age appropriate discussions of Eastern Japan Earthquake. Not only the level of distraction it had, but also the value of lives will be on the topic. When we let you know of the details, please be ready to help your children.

Class I

Study Objectives:

- Sit with correct posture, and write Hiragana with correct stroke order.
- Feel the spring season.
- Learn the names of new classmates, and play well together.

Learning Activities:

- Make a small book that has vocabulary words with Hiragana of the week to reinforce the learning.
- Learn the basics of Origami by making spring flower origami.
- Sing spring songs with loud and energetic voice.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Hiragana Ya, Yu, Yo, Wa, Wo, N, the words that uses those hiragana, and their correct stroke orders and neat hand printing.

Class II

Study Objectives:

- Learn the names of new classmates, and play well together.
- Correctly read and write irregular letters (long vowel, assimilated sound, diphthong, sonant, semi-dull sound)

Learning Activities:

- Play aloud of name memory game, and irregular letter tong twister.
- Enjoy looking for vocabulary that use irregular letters in the school yard.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Tokei (clock), Yajirobei (balancing toy), Yakyuu (baseball), Sumou (Sumo), Megane (eye glasses), Tamago (egg), Sanpo (a walk), Shippo (tail), Hitsuji (sheep) etc

Class III

Study Objectives:

- Discuss Eastern Japan Earthquake
- Create simple sentences

Learning Activities:

- Learn the life of the refugee children of earthquake.
- Think about the children in Japan
- Think about what we can do for them
- Write journals
- Look for spring (in school yard)

Study Objectives:

- Describe what they saw, felt, heard, and smelled in Japanese.
- Learn describing words (adjectives and adverbs)
- Read aloud materials about Eastern Japan Earthquake, and think about lives

Learning Activities:

- Look for springs in school yeard
- Search for antonyms.
- Read an article regarding to a 3rd grader who look for her family in refugee camp, and discuss in class.
- Compare the differences between the lives before and after earthquake while using class materials as a reference.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Hana ga saiteiru. Tori ga naiteiru. Hana no ii nioi ga suru. (Flowers are flowering. Birds are singing. Flowers smell nice.)

A - ll

Study Objectives:

- Review of geographic directions the students learned during the second semester and relate them to the words “Tohoku chihou” (northeast region) which have been mentioned frequently in the Los Angeles region since the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Acquire deeper knowledge of the Tohoku region.
- Be able to read aloud and understand reading materials on Tohoku region and think about the value of human life.

Learning Activities:

- Read and discuss an article about a 3rd grader who searches for his/her family in an evacuation shelter.
- Based on the study material on the Tohoku region, compare how the lives of the victims changed before and after the disaster.
- Based on the above, students will consider what they can do to help the victims and act on the ideas.

- Vocabulary -
Tohoku chihou , tsunami, jishin (earthquake), saigai (hazards), inochi (life), komaru (experience difficulties), hinan suru (evacuate), ken (prefecture), shi (city) etc.

- Grammar and Expressions -

A - lll

Study Objectives:

- Acquire further understanding of the Great Tohoku earthquake.
- Consider what they can do to help the victims and act on the ideas.
- Conduct a research on resources, waste, and recycling and verbally present in front of the class the result of the research.


Learning Activities:

- Read articles about the Great Tohoku earthquake and discuss in class what they can do for the victims.
- Conduct a survey on how much recycling is done at KNI and present the result of the survey in class.
- Conduct a survey on the waste stream at home and try to think of a way to reduce waste at home. Act on the ideas.

Middle school

Study Objectives (December through February):

- Have a clear understanding of the earthquake hazards and consider what they can do to help the victims. Act on the ideas.
- Read material with multiple paragraphs on natural resources, waste, and the importance of recycling, and be able to extract the main ideas. Be able to relate the above context with his/her daily life.
- Based on the above knowledge, students will be able to come up with their own ideas to reduce waste and act on them.
- Understand and be able to explain the content of graphs showing the change in the amount of waste and recycling chart.
- Research the waste stream in the city of Los Angeles and accurately present the results as paragraphs in the forms of essay, report paper and/or verbal presentation (this is only if there is sufficient time).
- Be able to read and write using the main vocabulary (in Kanji) to discuss the above topics.

Learning Activities:

- Discuss in a class what is actually going on and what problems the victims are experiencing through reading articles and looking at photos of the Great Tohoku earthquake.
- Based on the above discussion, determine what they can do to help the victims and act on the ideas.
- Conduct a survey on the amount of waste at their own homes, calculate how much waste is generated per each person, and present the results in class.
- Compare charts that show the difference in the amount of waste generated by different countries. Consider the reasons and causes behind these numbers. Practice presenting the information on the charts to explain what is going on.
- (if there is enough time) research online about the Los Angeles’ waste stream. Present the results in class.
