May Theme : Children's Day, Mother's Day

Regarding the Sports Day

In the past, many Saturday Japanese class students have missed the annual Sports Day event, but there are actually lots of races for them to participate in. Please come and join us for this fun event! We are sure that they will have a blast!

On the day of the event, we will set up a reception desk for Saturday Japanese class students. Please check in at the reception desk to get a name tag, and make sure to wear it during the event. Thank you.


Class I

Study Objectives:

- learn how to write one's own name neatly
- Enjoy Children's Day's activities and learn about the holiday
- Work on Mother's Day crafts
- Prepare for the Sport Day

Learning Activities:

- Koinobori ( Carp streamer) origami craft, Kabuto ( Japanese samurai armour helmet) newspaper craft
- Make a Mother's Day card
- Game with Hiragana cards

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Collect words that include あ, い, う, え, お, and learn how to write them neatly with proper stroke orders.

Class II

Study Objectives:

- Learn about Children's Day, Mother's Day, and Sport Day
- Learn key words regarding these activities, and read materials relating to them

Learning Activities:

- Koinobori ( Carp streamer) origami craft, Kabuto ( Japanese samurai armour helmet) newspaper craft
- Make a Mother's Day card

- Mother's Day craft ( six volumes of small books)

- Learn about Children's Day
- Make sentences to express oneself
- Speak clearly and listen carefully

Learning Activities:

- Learn how to sing "Koinobori"
- Koinobori ( Carp streamer ) origami craft
- Composition study
- Learn how to give a presentation with a loud voice
- Listen carefully to classmates' presentation

Study Objectives:

- Expand the understanding of children's day and mother's day, and deepen the thoughts about appreciation
- Notice the differences in details of everyday life in conjunction of world dinner table project and research about eastern Japan (continue to June)

Learning Activities:

- Read passages regarding to the origin of children's day and mother's day
- Write thank you notes to the people who supported the bazaar
- Write the letter to attach the relief fund collected by bazaar
- Note Eastern Japan within world map

Study Objectives:

- Expand the understanding of Eastern Japan Earthquake, and think about what we can do as well as carrying the plan out.
- Research about natural resources, waste, and recycling, and be able to verbally present your research
- Deepen the understanding of children's day's origin and culture.


Learning Activities:

- Write a letter to the earthquake refugee
- Research your own family's waste, plan how to reduce the waste, and carry it out.
- Understand the world's waste problem
- Read material regarding to the origin of children's day

Middle school

Study Objectives (December through February):

- Take action to help the earthquake refugees
- Based on the studies in class, plan how to reduce the waste in your own every day life, and carry out the plan.
- Learn to read the graphs that show the over-time change in waste amount, and the charts that show the waste recycling, and then explain the findings from the graphs and the charts.
- Research Los Angeles' waste management, and be able to construct paragraphs that explain the findings in either essay, report, or verbal presentation. (If time permits)
- Read and write the Kanji that appear in the main topic and the vocabulary

Learning Activities:

- Write letters to ask for water donation for the sports day
- Research your own family's waste, calculate how much waste is created by one person, and present to the class.
- Compare waste volume by countries using a graph, and think about the reason for the difference. Practice explaining the graph.
- Research about Los Angeles' waste management through internet and other resources, and present to class (If time permits)
