Class I

Review and Summary for the school year

- Learn how to use the facilities at preschool and to follow the rules / Learn the names of friends and play together / Become interested in learning Hiragana / Give thanks for the Autumn harvest, and become interested in various vegetables and fruits.
- Learn how to read one’s own name written in either Hiragana or Katakana / Hold the pencil in proper way with good posture while writing letters. Write letters with proper pressure.
- Learn the origin of Christmas, and enjoy the Christmas Season.
- Celebrate the New Year with friends / Enjoy playing the traditional Japanese New
Year’s games with them.
- Learn the origin of Setsubun, and participate in Mamemaki (Bean throwing
ceremony) activity / Learn to read Hiragana.
- Learn the origin of Momo no Sekku (season of peach blossom), and become
interested in Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Festival) / Learn the song for the class
performance day, and enjoy singing it on the stage.
- Sit with proper posture, and be able to write Hiragana with correct stroke order /
Being able to write one’s own name neatly.
- Being able to feel the spring season / Learn the names of the new classmates, and
have fun playing together.
- Participate in the Children’s Day event and learn more about it / Enjoy making the
Mother’s Day gift.
- Enjoy practicing the Sports Day’s events.

Class II

Review and Summary for the school year

- Being able to greet others with a clear and cheerful voice / Learn names of friends
and have fun playing together / Become familiar with describing words
(adjectives and adverbs).
- Become familiar with the words that describe the movement, and being able to
use them / Increase the number of vocabulary by playing the game of Shiritori.
- Being able to write short letters and cards / Learn the basic rules of the irregular
sounded words, such as long vowel, and being able to use them.
- Being able to write the New Year’s Day post cards. / Try Kakizome (the first year
of calligraphy) with pencil, and learn the oriental zodiacs / Become interested in
words related to the New Year and being able to write them.
- Enjoy the Mamemaki (bean throwing ceremony) at Setsubun / Being able to write
Daku-on (sonant) and Handaku-on (semivoiced sound) clearly / Being able to
read Katakana.
- Learn about the origin of Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Festival), and enjoy the event /
Recite/read the poem “Omoide no Arubamu (Album with Memories)” clearly in front of the class.
- Remember the names of the new classmates who join the class in April, and play together.
- Learn how to read and write clearly irregular letters such as long vowel, assimilated sound, sonant, and semivoiced sound.
- Become familiar with events such as Children’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Sports Day, and enjoy each of them / Being able to read and write the words related to these events.

Class III

Review and Summary for the school year

- Learn the names of friends and understand how to write them / Being interested in
Halloween event and enjoy it / Being interested in the various signs throughout
the preschool facility and understand them.
- Learn names, sizes, colors, and tastes of the familiar vegetables and fruits, and
being able to write them / Enjoy making crafts with the things in nature and in
Autumn.
- Learn Katakana and practice writing it / Write a letter to Santa Clause.
- Understand the rules of traditional Japanese New Year’s games and enjoy them
with friends / Learn the words related to Mochitsuki (rice cake pounding) and the
New Year.
- Become familiar with Setsubun event by doing various activities related to the
event / Continue learning Katakana.
- Make Hina dolls with Origami, listen to the story of Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Festival),
and develop interest in Hinamatsuri event / Practice the play for the class
performance day.
- Have a discussion about Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster. Being able to
compose simple sentences.
- Become interested and participate in the activities related to “Children’s Day” /
Feel appreciation towards one’s mother for “Mother’s Day.”

A - l

Review and Summary for the school year

- Being able to have conversations as the customer and the clerk at the “House of
Sweets” / Gather information to make a flyer, and being able to write thank you
notes for the customers afterwards.
- Being able to read the Japanese words and to write them clearly / Observe the
Daikon radish seeds at the garden / Being able to read poems and sing songs.
- Being able to pronounce Japanese words clearly / Being able to write words
firmly and with proper posture.
- Increase Japanese vocabulary through playing the New Year’s games / Learn
acronyms / Learn the order of the work and describe it in Japanese.
- Through the Takuan Project, being able to explain simply how the Daikon radish
become Takuan pickles (At the presentation day, each student can make a clear
presentation).
- Learn about “Children’s Day” and compose a short essay. Read it out loud and
clearly. Become good listeners.

A - ll

Review and Summary for the school year

- Learn to communicate buying and selling in Japanese. To be able to write cards asking for candy donations and thank you letters.
Understand the difference between a normal sentence and a segmented sentence. To be able to read class materials out loud with the understanding of punctuation marks.
- To understand the process of creating maps by flattening the globe and its relative positioning and the difference in views depending on which country is placed in the center.
- To be able to write words used during New Year’s play and calligraphy. Learn to play in groups using a compass.
- Understand the four seasons in Japan through Setsubun. To further understand words that describe sequence using the process of folding something in three.
- Understand the basics of a map and be able to act as a guide. Learn to associate seasonal holidays with the Japanese climate.
- Create and play Karuta. To be able to have the preschool children play Karuta at the presentation.
- Use words that express directions learned during the second semester and the word “Tohoku region” to further understand the disaster stricken area. Read about the “Tohoku region” aloud and think about life. To understand Children’s Day and Mother’s Day.

Review and Summary for the school year

- Read and learn the origins of Halloween and be able to explain out loud. Understand the relationship between nature, living things and society. Examine nature up close and think about what we can do to protect nature. Learn to capture the main points of the reading material.
- Read and learn the origins of Thanksgiving and be able to explain out loud.
- Understand the realities of near extinct animals. To further understand Japanese New Years holiday.
- Get acquainted with the New Years traditions via New Year’s calligraphy and understand Chinese zodiac signs. Think about energy used on a daily basis.
- Understand Setsubun and HinaMatsuri.
- To understand global warming and the energy used every day. To be able to present out loud about recycling, garbage, etc. To understand the “new” seven wonders of the world and to be able to explain out loud.
- Deepen one’s knowledge of the recent earthquake in the Tohoku region and think about what we can do to help.
- Understand the origins and traditions of Children’s Day.

Middle school

Review and Summary for the school year

- To collect information regarding surrounding nature, form a list and explain in detail in multiple paragraphs. Understand words that are Chinese in origin and to be able to use them for important subject matters. Read and listen to topics regarding life and nature. Present one’s findings in class in multiple sentences. Take leadership and assist younger members within a group. Analyze one’s group’s performance and write a review.
- Read and listen to topics about life and nature.
- Compare lifestyles of the past and present and analyze how the difference in energy usage is affecting our society/environment.
- Think about what one can do to conserve energy and act on it. Read articles on energy and the environment, understand their contents.
- Research energy usage at home and either present aloud or write essays and reports. ( Use Kanji for important words.)
- Learn to clearly communicate one’s ideas for the Presentation. Learn to get one’s ideas across while respecting other people’s ideas during discussions at the Presentation,
- Understand the realities of the disaster that struck Japan and think about what one can do and act on it.
- Read issues concerning natural resources and recycling and be able to relate to one’s daily life.
- Proactively help earthquake victims in Japan.
- Think of how to reduce personal waste on a daily basis and act on it.
- Read and explain graphs about amounts of waste and recycling.
- Research how Los Angeles processes garbage and explain in multiple paragraphs in essay/report form or oral presentation.
