Theme for the month: Halloween
Beginner Class 1 - Ms. Ozeki
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Develop a sense of gratitude for fall produce and learn about Fall fruits and vegetables
- Learn how to read one's own names in hiragana or katakana
Class Activities:
- Word game to review hiragana - find words that start with hiragana learned in class
- Learn Japanese songs relating to the Fall; sing and dance to the songs
Grammar & Vocabulary:
Collect words that include か、き、く、け、こ and learn how to write them in the correct order
Beginner Class 2 - Ms. Takakura
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Create posters for the Candy House Event
- Shopping role-play; play the role of a shop assistant or a customer
- Learn katakana, the long vowel sound, and hiragana with the small や、ゆ、よ、つ
Class Activities:
- Preparation for the Candy House Event
- Create the Candy House Event posters
- Create the thank you posters to show appreciation for those who attend the Candy House Event
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Irasshaimase ( Welcome to the store), Ikuradesuka? ( How much is it?), Arigatougozaimasu (Thank you for shopping)
- Learn new words through creating posters
Intermediate Level Class - Ms. Sakamoto
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Develop the ability to transcribe various sounds such as long vowels or double consonants (such as katta) by counting beats (similar to English syllables).
- Develop the ability to write letters.
- Develop the ability to voice one’s opinions through the collaborative project, “Candy House.”
Class Activities:
- Read out loud and comprehend the texts #3: “Kana (Japanese alphabet) Letters and the Number of Sounds,” and #4: “Let’s think About the Earthquake Struck Region”
- Dictation
- Letter writing to the Shishiori Elementary School Students
- The Candy House project
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Connecting [HA] (read as WA)
- Corresponding letters to the long vowel sounds and double consonants.
- Kanji characters and vocabulary from the texts #1-#4
Advanced Level Class - Ms. Oota
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Take a leadership role in the Candy House preparation
- Transcribe various Japanese sounds (See level 3)
Class Activities:
- Word play with cards that show partial words.
- Create solicitation and invitation letters for the Candy House project.
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Opposite words: The students are encouraged to write those in kanji to increase their vocabulary for words in which two or more kanji are combined.
AP Preparation Class - Ms. Yamada
Specific Lesson Goals and Class Activities:
- Listening practice using materials used at college ( Unit 2; Weather )
- New students; learn kanji from a kanji online website, associate the meaning of the kanji to the equivalent words in English, make short sentences consisting of subjects and verbs with proper punctuation; email those short sentences
- Advanced students; write an essay with 400 words in 20 minutes and email the essay
