Theme for the month: Christmas

Beginner Class 1 - Ms. Ozeki

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Maintain good posture while writing; learn to apply proper pressure on a pencil when writing
- Learn about the origins of Christmas and enjoy activities relating to Christmas

Class Activities:
- Create a Christmas card with hiragana learned in class
- Learn Christmas songs; sing and dance to the songs

Grammar & Vocabulary:
Collect words that include sa, shi, su, se, so and learn how to write them in the correct order


Beginner Class 2 - Ms. Takakura

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Create a Christmas card using hiragana and katakana learned in class
- Learn special terms used for Shuji Calligraphy and learn how to write with an ink brush using ink on hanshi paper

Class Activities:
- Calligraphy
- Create a Christmas card
- Observation note for the growth of daikon

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- words relating to Christmas
- shougatsu ( New Year ), sum ( ink ), fude ( ink brush ), hanshi ( writing paper ), bunchin ( paper weight )
- kanji; 文, 名


Intermediate Level Class - Ms. Sakamoto

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Understand the mechanics of multiplication and use times table to accurately answer the multiples of certain numbers.
- Use good posture when writing.

Class Activities:
- Read study materials out loud (words that have different meanings, clock reading, times table)
- Dictation
- Practice for the first brush strokes of the year

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Multiplied by, subtract
- Post positions (equivalent to English ‘with’)
- Post positions (the letters attached to subjects)
- The year of Horse (Next year’s zodiac)
- Japanese words for Sumi stick , Sumi grinder to make ink, brush


Advanced Level Class - Ms. Oota

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Know polite speech and apply it to actual conversations
- Write sentences in more naturally sounding Japanese as opposed to direct translation from English.
- Use good posture when writing.
- Understand parts of Kanji characters fully. (Many Kanji characters are a combination of such parts.)

Class Activities:
- Create a bilingual Christmas card for the students of Shishiori elementary school.
- Practice for the first brush strokes of the year. (Through the Japanese traditional calligraphy along with the use of related materials such as brush, ink and paper, the students will be exposed to Japanese culture).

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Various polite expressions from casual phrases such as “How are you?”
- Adverb phrases: As if ~ ; Not at all; Probably, (in Japanese, certain adverbs have corresponding endings for modified verbs).


AP Preparation Class - Ms. Yamada

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Learn about the 47 Japanese prefectures and regions, and prepare for the January presentation
- Learn how to manage time so that one can keep up Japanese study while dealing with a busy schedule along with other activities

Class Activities:
- Review last month's study: how people live differently in other cities in the world in terms of food, housing and climates
- Research how different regions in Japan have different features; the students choose a prefecture to research based on their preference or their parents' hometown for the presentation, and discuss how to find a theme and how to research; make a schedule for the presentation

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- 〜no syusshinchi wa … desu. / 〜 wa … no syusshin desu. ( 〜 is from … )
