Theme for the month: New Year
Beginner Class 1 - Ms. Ozeki
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Celebrate the new year with the classmates
- Experience traditional Japanese new year's games
- Maintain good posture while writing; learn to apply proper pressure on a pencil when writing
Class Activities:
- Experience traditional Japanese new year's games; play "karuta-tori" ( Japanese card game)
- Write nengajo ( Japanese new year's card) to family members and friends
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Collect words that include ta, chi, tsu, te, to and learn how to write them in the correct order
- Learn how to read the days of the week and the date ( tsuitachi futsuka, mikka, yokka )
Beginner Class 2 - Ms. Takakura
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Experience traditional Japanese new year's games and learn new words while playing the games
- Learn about the Japanese zodiac
- Experience kakizome ( Japanese calligraphy)
- Write nengajo ( Japanese new year's card)
Class Activities:
- Play traditional Japanese new year's games; karuta-tori, fukuwarai, kendama
- Read about the Japanese zodiac
- Write nengajo to family members and friends
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Memorize twelve Japanese zodiac sings.
- Akemashite omedetougozaimasu. ( Happy new year )
- Kanji; 年、早、中、入、犬、目、口、耳、手、足
Intermediate Level Class - Ms. Sakamoto
Specific Lesson Goals:
- The students will be familiar to New Year’s greetings in Japanese.
- The students can read, write and understand the meaning of Kanji characters covered in the first semester.
Class Activities:
- With a reading material, role playing to practice New Year’s greetings appropriate for addressing the Japanese senior to the students.
Kanji quizzes
- The first calligraphy of the year – Horse (this year’s zodiac sign)

Advanced Level Class - Ms. Oota
Specific Lesson Goals:
- The students can properly use the words pertaining to the Japanese New Year as well as demonstrating their good understanding.
- The students will be able to logically understand scientific reading materials.
Class Activities:
- Experience in real life the logic behind the scientific reading. For example, the students will be asked about the sweetness detecting area in their tongue or about human’s equilibrium.
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Traditional New Year items (seasonal decorations at the entrance and special cuisine); words indicating logical progression such as for example, for this reason, therefore, etc.)ings for modified verbs).
AP Preparation Class - Ms. Yamada
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Deepen the understanding of Japanese New Year's tradition
- Presentation; 47 Japanese prefectures and regions
- Learn about Japanese administrative divisions
- Learn how to manage time so that one can keep up Japanese study while dealing with a busy schedule along with other activities
Class Activities:
- Review the study of November and December : how people live differently in other cities in the world in terms of food, housing and climates
- Research Japanese regional features and make a presentation
