We are very happy to announce the wonderful news that Ms. Yamada gave birth to a boy last month! He weighed 3200g and his name is Shota. Both Ms. Yamada and Shota are doing really well!!!


Theme for the month: The Spring

Beginner Class 1 - Ms. Ozeki

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Learn how to write hiragana with proper pencil pressure while maintaining good posture
- Observe how seasons change; find what Spring has brought

Class Activities:
- Create a small booklet with the hiragana learned in the class
- Origami craft; Spring flower
- Learn Japanese songs of Spring

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Collect words that include ra, ri, ru, re, ro and learn how to write them in the correct order


Beginner Class 2 - Ms. Takakura

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Observe what Spring has brought in the school yard; create sentences describing objects found in the yard
- Make sentences including kanji and katakana learned in the class

Class Activities:
- Make sentences including details such as when, where, who
- Make a presentation of objects found in the school yard with drawing and sentences
- Read books aloud and clearly

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- 〜wo 〜shimashita. 〜ga arimashita. 〜ga imashita.
- 力 ( power )、小 ( small )、休 ( rest )、百 ( hundred )、千 ( thousand )、円 ( yen )


Intermediate Level Class - Ms. Sakamoto

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Master the counting phrases and words.
- Include words that describe textures in conversations.

Class Activities:
- Materials for reading out loud.
- How Many? Numerical positioning.
- Dictations of a set of Kanji characters.
- Guessing games.

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Numerical positions when counted from various vertical and horizontal directions.
- Count 1 to 20, hundred and thousand. Counting words (in Japanese, certain suffixes follow depending on items counted). For example, a sheet of paper will be followed by “mai,” “hiki or piki” for small animals, “tou” for bigger animals and “dai” for large items such as a car.

Advanced Level Class - Ms. Oota

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Learn how to open one’s mouth for correct Japanese pronunciations.
- Memorize various parts of Kanji characters with the understanding that Kanji is the combination of such parts.
- Understand the correct order of Japanese sentences.

Class Activities:
- Read sentences by paying attention to where to pause.
- Take Kanji characters apart and combine them.
- Exercise sheets.

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Read by phrases.
- Memorize the phrases and copy them.
- Recognize the position of both subject and verb for various sentences and insert appropriate post positions.


AP Preparation Class - Ms. Miyajima

With the successful presentation on the annual presentation day, we concluded the study of Japanese geography, climate, and livelihood which we had worked on since September.
In the third trimester, we will work on past exam questions from the Japanese AP test.

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Become familiar with the Japanese AP test and the SAT subject test.
- Figure out what needs to be done in order to pass these tests and set one's own objectives.

Class Activities:
- Work on past exam questions
- Analyze when making wrong answers

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Four hundred ten essential kanji and Japanese expressions
