Class 1 (Kindergarten Level) - Ms. Ozeki
Lesson Goals:
- Write your full name in a nice handwriting
- Participate in "Kodomo no Hi (Children's Day)" Activity to understand the ritual
- Enjoy making a present for "Haha no Hi (Mother's Day)"
- Actively participate in the practice for "Undoukai (Sports Day)"
Class Activities:
- Craft: "Koi nobori (Carp banner)" with Origami, and "Kabuto (Samurai Warrior Helmet)" with newspaper
- Handmade card for "Haha no hi (Mother's Day)"
- Reading game with Hiragana cards
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Hiragana words that include letters
"ぱ(pa), ぴ(pi), ぷ(pu), ぺ(pe), ぽ(po)"
ex. "Rappa (a bugle)", "Enpitsu (a pencil)", "Senpuuki (a fan)",
"Tanpopo (a dandelion), etc.
Class 2 (Kindergarten Level) - Ms. Umehata
Lesson Goals:
- Learn the origin of "Kodomo no Hi (Children's Day)" and enjoy the ritual.
- Engage in the activities for "Haha no hi (Mother's Day)" event and "Undoukai (Sports Day)" festival
- Continue to make a small book
Class Activities:
- Make "Kabuto (Samurai Warrior helmet)" and "Koinobori (Carp banner)" with newspaper and origami
- Make a card for Mother's Day

Class 3 (Elementary lower grades) - Ms.Yamada
Lesson Goals:
- Learn and celebrate the traditions of "Kodomo no Hi (Children’s day) "
- "Haha no Hi (Mother’s day)" – show appreciations to mother.
Class Activities:
- Fold origami carps
- Eat "Kashiwa mochi (Rice cake wrapped in an oak leaf)"
- Sing the “Koinobori (carp banner)” song
- Write a thank you letter for the mother’s day
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Geometry: "Shikaku (squares)", "Naga shikaku (rectangles)", and "Hanbun (half)"
- Read “Sou-hou no uma” aloud
- Sing "Itsumo ~ arigatou (thank you always)"
Class 4 (Elementary middle grades) - Ms. Sakamoto
Lesson Goals:
- Understand the traditions of "Kodomo no hi (Children's Day)" and enjoy the "Kashiwa mochi (rice cake wrapped with an oak leaf)"
- Learn about the kanji related to the "Undoukai (Sports day)"
Class Activities:
- Practice reading and comprehending the use of transition letters and sentence break. Use “/” to break up the phases as we focus on the use of transition words.
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Expressions of second hand knowledge such as "~toiu", "~da sou desu"
- Learn 5 new Kanji weekly
Class 5 (Elementary Senior Grades) - Ms. Ohta
Lesson Goals:
- Understand the historical background of "Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) In Japan, it is the day to celebrate boys’ health and growth just like to celebrate girls on "Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Day)".
- Develop the ability to read a sentence by two to three meaning blocks and write a sentence using Kanji.
- Use polite expressions for showing one’s gratitude and making a request.
Class Activities:
- Learn the reason behind the custom to hang "Koinobori (carp banners)".
- Make a "Haha no Hi (Mother’s Day)" card and create a letter soliciting beverage donations.
- Make a "Kabuto (Samurai warrior helmet)" with origami as a gift for lower grade students.
Grammar Vocabulary:
- Weekly dictation tests from the Kanji textbooks.
- Expressions such as "I would like to ask for your cooperation in ~"
or "We greatly appreciated that (for) ~" etc.
Class 6 (SAT/AP Prep) – Ms. Miyajima
Lesson Goals:
- Make a presentation on the AP test with test-taking tips (the goal applicable to this year’s test takers).
- Make a presentation on one of the three events in May based on an interview.
- Organize Kanji letters by parts and draw meanings from them.
Class Activities:
- Mother’s Day card making
- Pick a topic from one of the May events and write a report that includes the origin and descriptions of the selected event and an interview with a family member.
- Search kanji radicals for 410 AP kanji.
