November 2016 - Thanksgiving!l!

Class 1 (Kindergarten) - Ms. Ozeki

Lesson Goals:
- Have interest in Japanese words and actively participate in learning.
- Lean the meaning of Thanksgiving and appreciate the harvests of fall.
Class Activities:
- Word search game including the hiragana and katakana learned so far.
- Sing fall songs rhythmically with physical movements.
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Find words that use "ka,ki,ku, ke, ko ".
- Learn the proper and stroke of those words, and beautiful penmanship

Class 2 (Elementary Lower Grades) - Ms. Umehata

Lesson Goals:
- Have students be interested in a variety of vegetables and fruits with related to Thanksgiving
- “Make and Play” game
Class Activities:
- Be familiar with the names of fruits and vegetables and well as descriptive words to go with those items.
- Make donguriyajirobei (Acorn balancing toy)
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Learn descriptive words such as large, small, delicious, red, green yellow.
- Explain what and when of one’s action. Watashiwa(bokuwa), itsu, dokode _____wo shimashita.

Class 3 (Elementary middle grades) - Ms. Itagaki

Lesson Goals:
- Seek deeper understanding of the origin and meaning of harvesting and Thanksgiving event.
- Review all the kanji learned so far.
Class Activities:
- Reading assignment "tanpoponochie knowledge of dandelion”, "minorinoaki – fall harvest “
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Learn transition words such as “keredomo”-however, “yagate”-eventually
- Understanding the correct use of Japanese postposition.

Class 4 (Elementary Upper Grades) - Ms. Oota

Lesson Goals:
Lesson Goals:
- Read longer sentences and explain the content in their own words.
- Learn to speak politely with proper honorifics.
- Learn the uses of subject, predicate and modifier.
Class Activities:
- Making thank you cards to the candy donors.
- Handouts: Understanding of the subjects, predicate, modifying words in sentences.
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- "Thank you for your generous support." "We are glad to report the total sales of…", “Look forward to your support again during the next Okashiyashiki” etc.

Class 5 (SAT AP Preparation) - Ms. Yamada

Lesson Goals:
- Read and speak Japanese in the way that is easily understood.
- Learn about Japanese words related to fall season.
- Learn the cultural differences between Japan and US.
Class Activities:
- Read to younger class children – week 1: Hansel and Gretel, week2: little red riding hood, week 3: Wolf and 7 goats, week4: three little pigs
- Haiku making and discussion
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Weekly debate and discussion on different topics.
- Vocabulary, expression, conversational phrases, fall related words, US vs. Japan – holidays, differences in celebrations, Thanksgiving and Labor day
