January 2017 – Oshyougatsu!!!
January 8th, 2017 from 1pm to 3pm - Annual Mochi festival. We will again have the wadaiko performance!

Class 1 (Kindergarten) - Ms. Ozeki

Lesson Goals:
- Be able to share the joy of New Year.
- Experience the games of "Oshougatsu" with friends.
- Be able to write letters with proper way of holding pencil in proper posture.

Class Activities:
- Learn traditional Japanese games for New Year’s Day and experience Karuta card game.
- Learn about Japanese style New Year's card "Nengajou" and write one to friends and family.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Learn to write "ta, chi, tsu, te, to" in hiragana and katakana.
- Find words that begin with "ta, chi, tsu, te, to" and learn the proper way of writing beautifully.

Class 2 (Elementary Lower Grades) - Ms. Umehata

Lesson Goals:
- Enjoy traditional Japanese New Year's Day games.
- Build vocabulary through Japanese New Year's Day games.
- Learn about 12 animals in Japanese zodiac.
- Learn and experience Japanese culture through Mochi pounding.

Class Activities:
- Karuta card game, word games, etc.
- Listen to the story about 12 animals in Japanese zodiac.
- Share their experiences during the winter break.
- Participate in Mochi pounding event.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- "Omedetou gozaimasu."
- Memorize 12 animals' names in zodiac.
- "Tsuku (to pound)", "Marumeru (to roll into a ball)", "Musu (to steam)", "Usu (mortar)", "kine (pestle)", etc.

Class 3 (Elementary middle grades) - Ms. Yamada

Lesson Goals:
- Learn and experience the Japanese New Year's traditions.
- Learn the expressions of the four rules of arithmetic.

Class Activities:
- Kakizome (calligraphy), New Year’s game tournament.
- Learn the arithmetic expressions and try using in everyday life.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- New Year words - greetings, food, games etc.
- Use the four rules of arithmetic as descriptor (i.e. Add salt to the pickle jar).

Class 4 (Elementary Upper Grades) - Ms. Oota

Lesson Goals:
- Be able to write sentences with more descriptions.
- Be able create sentences with correct grammatical orders.
- Correct use of particles.
- Be able to write longer sentences with clear subject and predicate.

Class Activities:
- Write ones New Year resolution on 400-letter composition paper.
- Worksheet on correct use of postpositional particle.
- Write with the correct tense.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
-Write sentences on goals. “Last year I was / it was _______, hence this year I will _____________. “, “When I grow up, I would like to be ______”.

Class 5 (StepUp coruse) - Ms. Yamada


Lesson Goals:
- Be able to explain the Japanese new year traditions to non-Japanese friends.
- Be familiar with old Japanese expressions and 7-5 words (haiku and waka) expressions.

Class Activities:
- Read about the traditional Christmas and New Year events - "jyoya no kane", "hatsumoude", "Osechi", etc.
- Watch videos and comprehend.
- Learn the “i-ro-ha song”.
- Kakizome and new year games.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Learn the expressions related to New Year's greetings, games and "I-ro-ha" song.
