Dear Kodomo no Ie Students
You have been seeing Koinobori, the carp-shaped streamers flying recently in our school yard, haven't you? Do you know the reason why we fly Koinobori outdoors? Long long time ago, there was a big waterfall in China and lots of carp tried swimming up whitewater rapids as they heard the story that carp can become dragons when they successfully swim up whitewater rapids. However, all the carp except the one failed and were thrown into the waterfall basin. The one carp who succeeded in swimming up the whitewater rapids became a dragon as it had been promised. Based on this story, people started celebrating this holiday by flying Koinobori with the wish that their boys will grow up healthy and strong.
