From the Mochitsuki Committee:
Our annual Mochitsuki (rice cake pounding) Festival, held on January 8, was a big success! We were blessed with wonderful weather this year. We welcomed 575 visitors and raised $1,377 in donation! LA Taiko Ichiza gave a powerful performance and children even joined in and played the drums.
We would like to thank the Class Parents, the volunteers who helped out before and during the event, the Parents Association members, the teachers from weekdays and Japanese classes, and the families who supported them.
The money raised will go toward future Mochitsuki Festivals, as well as other Parents Association events. We look forward to seeing all of you again next year!
Chef Akira’s Cooking Class:
Mark your calendar for a cooking class (demonstration style) on Wednesday, March 15, from 8:50 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., hosted by Akira Hirose, owner/chef of the french restaurant, Maison Akira, in Pasadena.
We will offer daycare service for children under school age during the cooking class to accommodate all parents. (Your children can join you for the food tasting.)
We will post the menu, the class fee and other information shortly on the KNI Message Board and notify you via e-mail. We will also provide the English version of the recipe for English-speaking participants.
Don’t miss out on this great opportunity!
We will hold a Rummage Sale from Wednesday, February 22 to Saturday, March 4. If you have anything you’d like to donate, please drop them off under the tent on those days.
● Dates: Wednesday, February 22 to Saturday, March 4
● Place: Under the tent, just right of the school entrance
● Items: New or gently used items for kids and adults (i.e. books, clothes, toys, shoes, household items), fruits and vegetables from your garden, etc. We do not accept electronic appliances.
How it works:
The tent will be unattended and items will not be marked with a price. If you find something you like, simply put the donation money (any amount) in the “Tip Box” and take the item home with you.
Proceeds from the rummage sale will be split evenly between KNI and the Parents Association.
● Please put puzzle pieces and other small parts in a ziploc bag or tape them together for easy access.
● The tent will be unattended; therefore we ask that you help keep the place clean and ensure that children don’t play with the donated items. Thank you for your help in advance!
Christmas Pageant DVD:
We would like to thank the following people who volunteered as DVD filming crew for the Christmas Pageant: Bryan Sprow (parent of Liam from Momo); Akira Bock (Kiyona from Momo); Johnny Karlsson (Thor from Kiku); and Don Ptashne (Sean from Sakura).
We will place the finished DVD inside your child’s backpack once they become available. However, if you do not receive it or encounter any issues with the DVD, please notify the Parents Association at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please keep in mind that there is still a lot of work that needs to go into the editing process, which may result in delay in distribution. Thank you for your understanding.
I hope everyone is doing well, despite the rain and the cold weather.
As announced earlier, we began distributing the ASPIRE catalogue. We posted a list of “recommended items” near the attendance sheet. The deadline to submit an order is Saturday, February 18. Please help us out, even if it's only for one item.
We will also post a list of gift cards available through Scrip Fundraising near the attendance sheet. The gift cards are available at our Fundraising office.
