Topic for November: THANKSGIVING

Class I


Goals

・To be able to appreciate autumn harvests and be interested in vegetables and fruits
・To be able to read own names written in either Hiragana or Katakana

Class activities

・A game - look for words started with learned Hiragana letters
・A craft- Thanksgiving turkey, utilizing falling leaves
・To have fun singing an autumn song by following its rhythm

Grammar and Vocabulary

・To gather words starting with letter SA, SHI, SU, SE, SO, and to learn right stroke orders of these letters and how to write them neatly

Class II


Goals

・To be able to learn autumn fruits and vegetables to feel harvests.
・To know the rules of small letters and be able to use them in appropriate ways.

Class activities

・learning through some activities using vocabulary cards, and playing Shiritori game.
・practicing to recite tone twisters which contains small letters. 

Grammar and Vocabulary

・kaki, kinoko, kitte, sekken, kinngyo, isya, ocha, kasyu, etc.

Class III


Goals

.To be able to interested in and tell someone about the names, sizes, colors and tastes of familiar vegetables and fruits
.To be able to enjoy crafts utilizing autumn nature products

Class activities

・ researching what kinds of vegetables and fruits we have eaten
・researching what kinds of vegetables and fruits we have in our refrigerator
・a leaf letter
・a balancing toy with an acorn

Grammar and Vocabulary

・names of vegetables and fruits
・colors (green, red, white, orange, yellowish green)
・taste (sour, sweet)
・sizes (big, small, thick, long, medium)

Goals


・To be able to write a thank you letter to the Okashi-yashiki customers.
・To be able to explain about the Okashi-yashiki to classmates.
・To be able to read Japanese poems, and to sing Japanese songs.

Class activities

・To make a “thank you” poster for the Okashi-yashiki.
・To make a short sentence and read it aloud.
・To read and sing the poems which contain dates and days

・watashi (boku) wa XX o shimashita.
・watashi (boku) wa XX-deshita

Goals

・To be able to read Japanese sentences with the awareness of grammatical clauses
・To be able to use Japanese expression on calculating earnings from the Okashi-yashiki
. To be able to write a thank you letter to Ms. Sueishi.

Class activities

・To be familiar with longer sentences
・To calculate the earnings of the Okashi-yashiki
・To make a Thank you letter
・To play a game to find an opposite meaning words, and to group a variety of words  
         Etc.

Grammar and Vocabulary

・antonyms,synonyms, etc.
・how to use postpositional particle, such as “de,to,e,kara” etc.

Goals

・To be able to write a thank you letter to parents
・To be able to understand the background story about Thanksgiving, and explain it verbally.
・To be able to write sentences about pictures of Hungry Planet.
・To be able to know the importance of food through Ms. Sueishi’s speech.

Class activities

・To write a thank you letter to parents who donated candies to the Okashi-ayashiki
・To read a documents about Thanksgiving.
・Hungry Planet
・Speech by Ms. Sueishi as a survivor of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima.

・(Vocab)oreijyoo,kansyasai,yurai,senjyuumin, maneku, syokuryoobusoku, syuukaku etc.

Goals

・To be able to reflect on the Okashi-yashiki and calculate the earnings with lower-grade children.
・To be able to gain deeper understanding of importance of food and peace.

Class activities

・Group-work:reflection and calculation
・Thank you letter to Ms. Sueishi.
・The historical flow of Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods, the Shino-Japanese war, The Russo-Japanese war WWI, and WWII – learn them in Japanese and make a connection to what students learn in their public schools.

Grammar and Vocabulary

・Syakkin, uriage kin, syuukei, eiyou, sukikirai, teikokusyugi, syokuminchi, sinnryaku etc.
・「konsyuu mananda koto wa XX desu.」
 「konsyuu, XX nit suite gakusyuu shimashita」         etc.

・To be able to understand differences on expressions between “objects” and “animals”
・To be able to point places
・To be able to make sentences with verbs

・Roll-plays and games utilizing based on the daily occurrence. (Japanese that we are likely to use in our everyday lives).
