November 2015 – Thanksgiving!!!

Class 1 (Kindergarten) - Ms. Ozeki

Lesson Goals:
- Learn how to write with good posture and proper pencils to support children's writing pressure.
- Have students be interested in a variety of vegetables and fruits with an appreciation in the Fall harvest. 
- Lean the meaning of Thanksgiving and appreciate the harvests of fall.  

Class Activities:
- Book making using recently learned words.
- Sing fall songs rhythmically with physical movements. 
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Find words that use "ka,ki,ku, ke, ko ".
- Learn the proper and stroke of those words, and beautiful penmanship 

Class 2 (Elementary Lower Grades) - Ms. Umehata

Lesson Goals:
- Have students be interested in a variety of vegetables and fruits with an appreciation in the Fall harvest. 
- Cultivate interests in growing daikon that they have planted.

Class Activities:
- Be familiar with the names of fruits and vegetables.
- Descriptive expressions such as ; Color and size, First leaves, leaf shape, number of leaves, centimeters.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- practice reading dates and days of the week.
- Observe and record the growth of Daikon
- Experience tea ceremony

Class 3 (Elementary middle grades) - Ms. Yamada

Lesson Goals:
- Seek deeper understanding of the origin and meaning of harvesting and Thanksgiving event. 
-Be thankful of hard work and the life itself. 
- Able to describe east and west direction relative to a given location.
- As well as the understanding the longitude measurements as absolute description of locations. 

Class Activities:
- Reading assignment "Fall harvesting (How rice grows in Japan)", "Changing forms of Soy beans", and other reading and comprehension.
- Use compass to determine the cardinal directions and express the directions in Japanese. 
-Tea ceremony.


Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Cardinal directions, north, south, east, west, Northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere, etc. 
- Understanding the correct use of Japanese postposition. 

Class 4 (Elementary Upper Grades) - Ms. Oota

Lesson Goals:
- Able to write more detailed sentences
- Learn to speak politely with proper honorifics.

Class Activities:
- Making thank you cards to the candy donors. 
- Handouts: Understanding of the subjects, verbs, modifying words in sentences. 
-Tea ceremony experience.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- "Thank you for your generous support." "We are glad to report the total sales of…", “Look forward to your support again during the next Okashiyashiki” etc. 

Class 5 (SAT AP Preparation) - Ms. Sakamoto


Lesson Goals:
- Understand the process of nation-making.  (Our focus gears toward the ancient times as opposed to the US history that encompasses the modern era).

  Class Activities:
- Using materials from Japanese TV programs called History Knocks and Japanese History, the students engage in discussions under the title, “What if such and such were not invented?”

  Grammar and Vocabulary:

- Three weekly AP mandate Kanji characters and their common usage (e.g. theory, development, political system, etc. in meaning) that are rather used in written forms than in conversation.
- Words with identical phonetic reading but with different Kanji characters. (e.g.  “Osa”-meru.  The Kanji for the “Osa” part can have four different possibilities depending on the meaning of  the word itself).
 
- The students will learn about the formation of the tea ceremony (worksheet #10) during the second and third class meetings of this month.
