Parent Association June Newsletter
1: Parting words from Miki Davis, the president of KNI Parents’ Association, 2011-2012
Parting words from Miki Davis, the president of KNI Parents’ Association, 2011-2012
I am grateful to the many parent volunteers, Parents’ Association Board Members and all the teachers for making this year’s Sports Day another success. My main goal was to have not just the children, but the whole family enjoy the event. With that goal, we minimized the number of parent volunteers and relied a lot on the young and energetic KNI graduates who came to help out and the Saturday class teachers. Without their extra hard work, it would not have been possible. Being able to enjoy such a large-scale traditional school event here in Southern California is truly a valuable experience. I hope the tradition continues for years to come. Thank you all for your participation!
The last Sports Day was the sixth for our family. Watching my younger child’s Paraballoon performance was especially impressive, giving me a sense of accomplishment. I loved these valuable experiences at KNI through such events we cannot even experience living in Japan.
Looking back, words cannot describe how much the parents’ network at KNI has helped me get through the very challenging times of motherhood. 6 years ago, I couldn’t even imagine myself heading the Parents Association. As much as I admired all the experienced volunteers, I could barely volunteer for one event. As my children got older, I began to have a little more time for myself and wanted to contribute a little more. Honestly though, it was surprising to find myself as President.
Until I became a Board Member of the Association, I had no idea how much time and effort went in to supporting the school year-round. Representing the parents, my goals this year were to hold the events in a way in which both the participants and the volunteers were able to enjoy them as well as a more efficient Parents’ Association operation.
As KNI celebrates 25 years, the number of students has dramatically increased and the backgrounds of the students’ families have changed over the years. I sincerely hope that I was able to at least create a trigger to think about how to sustain the quality of the school and continue to provide an oasis for parents coping with the challenges of parenthood in an ever changing environment.
Lastly, I would like to thank all of the Board Members and my friends for supporting me throughout the year. I would not have been able to complete my term without your help. Thank you so much!!
